Taking Time Lapse Videos Outdoors

April 25th, 2011

I found a cool link for taking time lapse videos and I thought it would be great to repost here. If you’re interested in taking time lapse videos outdoors with your Digital SLR head over to these guys at Digital Photography School. Although the example done in this post is of a group of guys playing Mario Kart (which is the least outdoors you can get in my opinion) it will at least give you an idea of how to set up your camera for creating some awesome outdoor time lapse movies. Good luck! Let me know how they turn out!

iPhone in the Outdoors – apps and more.

January 16th, 2010

For the past two months I’ve been playing around with two iPhone apps for ski conditions. The verdict ? Nothing beats a real weather website.  While the iPhone apps are fun and novel the updating of conditions has been less than stellar. I’ve been running the “Ski Report” and the “REI Snow Report”. I wish I could give a really great review on both of them. With the “Ski Report” you can update conditions at the ski area for other users. However, it turns into pithy comments about how another ski area is better…get a life broseph, seriously. Additionally, the app goes without updates for days at a time and for those hunting powder it doesn’t help. The REI Snow Report stays a little closer to being up to date but still suffers from not keeping up with changing conditions.

While we’re on the subject of iPhones i wanted to talk about some cool innovations that are out there in regards to protecting/upgrading your phone for the outdoors.

It looks like A. there are some awesome cases out there to protect your iPhone.

The Otter Box Defender is pretty wicked awesome.

For someone who messes up their iPhone this seems pretty cool. The Otter Box Defender has a clear screen protector, and a polycarbonate case coated with silicon to absorb shock.

Part 1 – Ski Review

January 15th, 2010

I had the great joy and privilege of demoing some skis last week at the Summit at Snoqualmie and I wanted to give some feedback on the models I had tried and what the verdict was.

K2 – Coomback -Straight up solid ski, felt like they were made to tear up big mountain powder stashes and turned like Super G skis.

K2- Sidestash – Amazing, it’s like sex on snow. Wide under foot yet able to tear up the groomers, these suckers tear it up like no other. These skis turned like a GS ski.

Black Diamond – Justice

Heavy and slow. It seems like all of the Black Diamond skis that I was on where the same. Outdoor Magazine hailed the Justice skis as breaking the mold of heavy BD skis, not true.

The SPOT PN-60

January 11th, 2010

The SPOT device amazed me when I first heard about it. There’s two sides of the story on this one. On the upside the ability to safely send messages updating your progress on hikes and reaffirming your safety. The downside accidentally sending out an emergency call and having a Search and Rescue Team show up while you’re making breakfast. The new SPOT device in conjunction with Delorme makes the old SPOT look like Edward Norton and the new one look like Arnold (think Pumping Iron days).

Text messaging for the outdoors.

The device is pretty awesome all around. I can’t help but think what it means on a large scale. It’ll be odd though watching someone update their Twitter miles in the backcountry (will work someday follow me into the outdoors?).

Let’s just say this device has something for everyone. Geocachers are going to go nuts, there’s even a way to communicate with other SPOT users as well as see where they are with a map. The User Interface also looks very easy to use and really attractive. For more info head right over this way for the Official DeLorme Statement.
